Motor Oil: Learning the Truth

Regular motor oil changes help your car run smoothly, but there are myths about it that could make you change the oil when and how in the wrong manner.

Do looks matter? Not for motor oil. A myth is that black motor oil needs to be changed, but that's not true. As oil lubricates the engine, it picks up dirt, which changes the color. Some motor oils also contain additives that might make it appear darker, so don't let the color of the oil determine when you make a change. Using synthetic oil does not cause oil leaks. Back in the 1970s, when this type of oil use was new, leaks were a problem. These days, technology has eliminated that issue, except in much older vehicles that already have cracked seals.
